Please read "Important Information" for more details regarding your Teacher Training experience. 

 

Please note that some scheduling information listed here may be subject to change.


Please Enroll Early:

  • Enroll early to make sure you get a spot - courses often end up with waiting lists.

  • LASI may cancel teacher training courses if enrollment is insufficient.

  • Please enroll by May 1 so that a course you wish to take is not cancelled.

  • If a course you enroll for is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, you will be notified by May 6.

  • If you choose to purchase a non-refundable plane ticket before May 6, LASI will not be liable.

Enrichment Course

Part 1 - Teaching from the Inside Out: The Early Years

Instructor, Edmund Sprunger

  • June 22, 11am thru June 23 at 4:30pm
  • This 10 hour course is on child psychology and how it relates to teaching children in the early years of their musical development.
  • Open to any instrument.
  • Prerequisite is Every Child Can! & Unit 1.
  • Course will be registered with the SAA.
  • Class fee: $200
  • Enrichment course fee is $150 if you also take another Single Unit at LASI 2018.
     

Enrichment Course

Working with Parents: A Fearless Teacher’s Guide to Raising Proficient and Proactive Studio Parents

Instructor, Sarah Bylander Montzka

  • June 22, 11am thru June 23 at 4:30pm
  • This 10 hour course builds communication and strategizing skills to build the Suzuki triangle. 
  • Open to any instrument.
  • Prerequisite is Every Child Can! & Unit 1.
  • Course will be registered with the SAA.
  • Class fee: $200
  • Enrichment course fee is $150 if you also take another Single Unit at LASI 2018.

 

Every Child Can! (ECC)

Instructor, Edward Kreitman

June 14, 2018

  • 6 hours of class time providing an inspiring, in-depth look at the Suzuki approach to teaching and learning.
  • For teachers, prospective teachers, parents, and others interested in the Suzuki philosophy and method. 
  • Required first course in the Suzuki Association of the Americas Teacher Development Program.
  • Class fee: $175 (includes all materials, institute t-shirt, continental breakfast and light lunch)
  • Class is from 9-12 and 1-4
  • Class is not instrument specific and you do not need to bring your instrument to class.

 

Violin Unit 1

June 15-22, 2018

  • 28 hours of instruction
  • 15 hours of observation
  • Must take Every Child Can! (ECC) prior to beginning Unit 1.
  • Must complete the SAA audition process one month prior to beginning 
  • Read Dr. Suzuki’s Nurtured by Love
  • Memorize Book 1 repertoire.
  • Must take Unit 1 before completing other book levels.
  • Class fee

Piano Unit 1

  • 28 hours of instruction
  • 15 hours of observation

  • 8 hours of observation per unit
  • Books 1, 2 and 3 must be taken in order. 
  • (Participants can take both Unit 2 and Enrichment Course if they wish.)

Viola Unit 3

    • 15 hours of instruction
    • 8 hours of observation
    • Books 1, 2 and 3 must be taken in order. 
    • Prepare repertoire to be studied to the point of fluent performance
    • Memorization is not required but recommended
    • Class is Violin/Viola Unit 3.
    • Trainer will demo on violin and participants are required to bring a violin to class everyday. Trainer will pick a “viola day” where participants have the option of bringing in violas. “Viola Day” will cover viola specific issues that require demonstration and exploration. Participants are welcome to bring violas on the designated “viola day” but it is not required.
    • Class will be registered with the SAA as Violin Unit 3.
    • (Participants can take both Unit 3 and Enrichment Course if they wish.)

      Free Lectures

      • Parents/guardians of enrolled students and Teacher Workshop Participants may attend free lectures scheduled Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 4:10-4:50pm, which coincide with the Supplementary Classes for students.

      • Topics may include Suzuki Philosophy, communication, parent-child interaction, goals, early childhood development, working with teenagers, and instrumental techniques and musicianship. 
         
      • You will receive a schedule of lectures upon check-in.
